Find Genuine American Indian Artifacts

By Serena Price

American Indian artifacts can be rewarding to share and own. For many people, their native heritage is enough to motivate them to find unique items. Finding the appropriate things to purchase can be difficult and challenging. Using the resources that are available, it isn't impossible though. With enough time and effort, it can be a productive way of finding the thing that most embodies the spirit of the culture they wish to identify with.

Part of the problem is that it is difficult to prove exactly where such items were found. If something is claimed to be historically significant but can't be easily authenticated, it can be traded as a legal commodity, even if it isn't. Without the proper documentation, these items can be lost forever to people who choose to collect things that are inappropriate to own.

Another thing to avoid is black market items. They have often been stolen from grave sites or other culturally significant areas. Criminal loot these areas for their own profit and often times destroy the areas that they are looting. The impact this has on our understanding of our own history and culture can't be underestimated. They are some of the worst people in the world.

There are many different ways to sell, buy or trade the items in your collection with other collectors who are similarly minded. There are trade shows that deal with collectibles and with specific aspects of collections. People attend them to view and possibly even grow their own collections. There are shows that deal with sports memorabilia, autos, antiquities and more.

Attending these shows as a vendor is often a great way to downsize your collection and make room for more things. You can sell or trade your own items and take the time to check out other vendors and what they have to offer. Giving yourself the option of losing or gaining pieces is a great way to maintain a collection that is consistently varied.

The internet is another great way to stay involved with your hobby. There are sites that exist only to show collections and how they are displayed. These websites offer the novice collector the opportunity to learn how more serious collectors choose to display their own collections and gives them something to aspire to.

Finally, make sure to use your online resources to the best of your ability. There are plenty of reputable websites that deal with antiquities of all different kinds. Several of the auction sites are also a great option. You will be able to find a much bigger variety of things to choose from too. Just about anything you can imagine is available online.

Support and encourage the education of ourselves on our history buy not purchasing black market items that deal with history. American Indian artifacts and other similar things are best left in qualified hands like educators and historians. When put in the right places, like museums and universities, they have a much better chance to fulfill their potential for educating people about our history and ourselves.
