Maui Weddings: Keeping Your Guests Busy & Happy

By Ella Hemmings

Keeping guests happy and entertained at a typical wedding usually only requires planning a great reception and perhaps a rehearsal dinner the night before. When you opt for a wedding in a destination such as Maui, while you usually have fewer guests, they typically stay for several days. So it's wise to provide some information about local excursions and activities that your guests might enjoy.

Place a gift bag in each hotel guest room, and one handy option would be to purchase beach bags which can then double as a helpful tote. Load it up with a few amenities such as sunscreen, snacks and water as well as a bunch of local information. People need to know where to purchase items such as medicine or toiletries if the need arises, so provide a list of close-by grocery stores or drug stores. It's also nice to include a wedding itinerary that lists information about the ceremony, reception and other wedding-related events. You also should provide information about cool local excursions that people might enjoy.

Many people love coming to Maui and simply basking in the sun and playing in the ocean, but for people who have never been to the island, you might want to provide some assistance and directions. Provide a list of nearby beaches and how to get there as well as some information about each of the beaches. Maui has plenty of amazing options, but you probably just need to list three or four. If everyone is staying at a resort or large hotel, there probably will be beach access and definitely at least one swimming pool, and most hotels provide towels for their guests.

For a great, all-day adventure, consider having your guest take a guided tour to the village of Hana. This popular excursion entails driving down a windy road through a tropical rainforest and traversing hair-pin curves and more than 50 one-lane bridges. It also provides some of the world's best views and you can walk to waterfalls, swim on perfect beaches or just enjoy the view. You can drive yourself, but for a wedding party, consider a bus tour, which also will include food and there are no cafes, groceries or other food or beverage services along the way.

You might not have enough time for all-day trek to Hana, but there are many other ideas to think about. For instance a sunset cocktail cruise or a whale-watching trip is a great way to spend a few hours, and this would be an excellent activity for your whole wedding party. Horseback riding, ATV tours, kayaking trips and parasailing are just a sample of other items guests might enjoy.
