How To Find Christian Volunteer Opportunities

By Marissa Velazquez

Many Christians feel obliged to volunteer their time to assist other people. They feel this is one way of following in the footsteps of Jesus. It is also a way of abiding by the golden rule that says that you should treat people the way you would like to be treated. There are many Christian volunteer opportunities. All you need is to do a little research. Depending on what you want you should find an opportunity to help for a few hours, several days or even years.

You should decide whether you want a short term opportunity or you want to help for a long time. Short term projects are important for Christians who want to help others without making long term time and financial commitment. Some of the activities that one can participate in include serving food in church. There are many churches that have kitchens where they serve guests and members.

Help the other church members to serve patients. In some churches there are specific days when needy families are assisted to renovate their houses. They are also provided with clothes and food if necessary. You can also provide company to individuals who are sad and lonely. If you want to know what projects are open you need to contact churches around you. Matching services will also connect you to different volunteer jobs.

If you want to help for more than a day without committing yourself for a long time it is advisable to look for short term missions. Many denominations and churches organize missions all over the world. Mission groups are sent to different areas to serve people for a short period of time. Sometimes the group also helps with toys, clothing, medical care and spiritual education. This gives you a chance to use your professional skills as well. Therapists, teachers and doctors are usually in demand.

Some projects take a short time to complete but they require you to commit to them in the long term. A good example is delivering bulletins to residents and nursing homes. Sometimes you may also be required to assist other church members to visit sick people in hospital. Churches also need people to help families whenever they have lost a loved one.

This makes them long term commitments. The best people to utilize long term opportunities are retired individuals as well young people. Individuals who are between phases of their lives are also advised to take a break by participating in such projects.

Most big churches and denominations have chances for people who want to take part in long term projects. Participants are sent to different parts of the world where the church feels there is need. If you apply for such projects you will be working together with missionaries.

Some of the tasks you will probably be engaged in include feeding the poor, offering medical services, building schools, disaster relief, distributing clothes and giving spiritual services. It is important to decide how long you are willing to work when looking for Christian volunteer opportunities. After that you can start looking for churches that need a helping hand.
