New York is one of the states that have implemented the Freedom of Information Act. This law mandates the state to allow its local residents to access their personal records. One of the many documents that the residents can access is the marriage records New York generates.

Residents of New York request to obtain a copy of a marriage certificate to use it in a number of ways. The primary use of this document is for genealogy research. A marriage certificate contains information that is vital in updating the family tree. A marriage certificate is also necessary when processing transactions in the government. There are certain processes that would call for a copy of a marriage certificate and if it is not presented, the request can be denied. These transactions include insurance related matters and other financial matters. A marriage record is also where those who conduct a background check would look into. This is usually done by an individual before getting engaged. By doing this, they can avoid any problems in their marriage.

A marriage certificate in New York contains details about the marriage of a couple. One would know the complete names of the groom and the maiden name of the bride. The document also shows their personal details such as their birth date and place as well as their residence address and occupation. The document highlights information about their marriage such as when and where it was conducted. The names of the couple's parents are also indicated on the file along with the names of the official and the witnesses.

Only marriages that took place from 1880 are available in the state of New York. To get a copy of the said document, one has to pay the processing fee of $30. One can get genealogy copies if the file has reached 50 years and the couple is known to have passed away already. In order to get a copy of a marriage certificate, one has to fill out the request form with the basic information that can be found on the record. One has to provide the names of the bride and the groom as well as the date and place of their marriage. It is also important that the personal details of the one who filed the request are indicated on the request form. It will be used to check their relationship since the document is only released if the document is requested by the couple themselves or their families.

All of the public documents of New York are managed by the state's Department of Health Services under the Vital Records Section. Unfortunately for the counties Buffalo, Albany and Yonkers, records from 1880-1907 are not in the state archive.
